A Different Type of Home Sharing
Sites like Airbnb and HomeAway are taking on peer-to-peer short term accommodation by enabling homeowners and renters alike to rent out their idle space at a nightly rate. However, there are more ways to share your space as a host and enjoy a local experience as a guest than you may think!
Home exchange marketplaces, also known as home swapping, allow you to connect with a potential host, swap your home with them, and coordinate the exchange, but without the monetary transaction.
The process of listing your home on a marketplace like LoveHomeSwap.com is very similar to posting on Airbnb or other traditional home sharing marketplaces.
Home exchange guests are drastically different than the guests you will have on Airbnb, and it is unlikely that you will have any last-minute bookings.
Although some home swapping marketplaces are free, most are not and you must pay for a monthly or annual membership to join their network. Another difference to note is that home exchange—especially during international travel—requires that you get started much earlier in order to coordinate the swap so it is not ideal for last-minute trips!
Three Types of Home Exchange
There are three types of home exchange transactions:
- “Simultaneous Exchange”: This is the magic of home swapping. Coordinate and exchange with another host to stay in their home while they stay in yours for the desired—and agreed upon—period.
- “Non-Simultaneous Exchange”: Stay in someone’s second home or vacation home (Similar to the Airbnb “Entire Home/Apt” experience).
- “Hospitality Exchange”: Stay in the host’s home while they are there (Similar to the Airbnb “Private Room” experience).
